We just finished our Midwest road trip – aka the Wild West Adventure with my travelling companion and excellent driver Brendo Schack hitting the back roads hard in our rental Dodge Charger. We covered plenty of miles in a week that saw us draw in to the grand city of Minneapolis, a place blessed with many great coffee businesses.
At last we are on the ground again after getting the starting mechanisms sorted for this year’s Compak Golden Bean North America. I arrived in Portland last week and had a chance to catch up with the guys from the American Barista School to plan for this year’s fun awards. We put together some great ideas including a Portland Roasters tour for visiting delegates. We are in the final stages of confirming an impressive line up of speakers – we’ll publish more in a few weeks. I also had the chance to look at our venue space Castaway in Portland’s Pearl district. Thanks again to Don from Rancilio for some USA electrical advice on our machine setup in the engine room.
We would like to congratulate Ian Picco from Topeca Coffee in Tulsa Oklahoma on being the first to use our online booking system. Ian was a Medal winner last year and missed out on coming to the event as a delegate. We are rewarding Ian for being the first to enter the competition by giving him a free VIP ticket to The Golden Bean North America in Portland in September.
First Sneak Peak!
We have finalized our bag design with our Bag Sponsor Roastar and will be sending bags out to over 1,500 roasters in late August. We love the new bright colours of the bags and the metallic highlights that Roastar coffee bags are famous for in their unique customer coffee bag designs.
We have just finished setting up online registrations for this year’s Compak Golden Bean Coffee Roasters Competitions. This online entry system will speed things up and make easier the whole communication process. We receive and process thousands of coffee entries between the two global events, and are understandably very excited about this innovation. The new system will let you manage your coffee entries until you submit them and then once judged
It is phenomenal to have Silver Chef Limited back on board as a Social Night sponsor for this year’s Compak Golden Bean. President, Silver Chef Rentals Inc. Canada, and ex Australian Rules Professional Football player, Kristian Thanas will be at the event hosting an Aussie Beach Party at the Castaway venue.
We have picked the funky Jupiter Hotel as our preferred venue for this year’s Compak Golden Bean in September. We suggest getting in early if you want to attend as a delegate this year as we have picked The Portland Feast Festival weekend to make your visit more rewarding and complete. This means rooms are going to be harder to find in the city, so for a good rate at the Jupiter use code Compak Golden Bean.
The Team spent a few important days talking with industry about the Compak Golden Bean and were excited about the interest we received. SCAA is a great meeting point globally and it’s always a buzz to catch up with industry friends from around the world. Check out the following snaps from our fun week in Atlanta.
News from above with Phillip Di Bella
Am I a good parent, do I make a difference, can I afford to hire more staff?
A global company asked more than 2,500 clients what was on their mind and not without surprise, many responded with these questions. As a business owner, it is easy to get absorbed by your day to day business and lose sight of your true motivation and the most important people in your life.
International Women’s Coffee Alliance
Legal and cultural practices in many coffee growing regions around the world restrict women from the economic opportunities that would generate significant improvements for their families, their businesses and their communities. The empowerment of these women with these opportunities to make social and economic change must engage both men and women in understanding the value that can be brought to their lives.
New Location and Dates
The Golden Bean North American team is excited to announce that we have set the dates for next year’s event in Portland, Oregon. We had a great response from our first year in Portland and have decided to pick a bigger venue so we can handle the larger number of delegates that have already expressed interest.
